Background

Remittances account for almost 10% of the Philippines’ GDP. BDO Unibank is one of the commercial banks that generates the largest overseas Filipino remittances.


At the start of the pandemic in 2020, there was a decline in remittances sent to the Philippines and BDO Remit’s non-digital process prevented remitters from using their services.


The goal is to create a digital process for BDO Remit customers to use to successfully remit money in a convenient, safe, and secure manner.

Understanding the users

User Behaviors

  • Users send remittances to support family in the Philippines.

  • They stay closely connected to Filipino communities.

  • Falling in line to fill in forms.

  • Concerns go through either provided bank email address or bank on site.

When do remittances happen

  • Every payday (bi-weekly or monthly)

  • Christmas & New Year

  • Back-to-school season (May–June)

  • Family events (birthdays, milestones)

  • Emergencies (medical, natural disasters)

User needs

  • Fast and reliable transfers

  • Low and transparent fees

  • Easy-to-use interface

  • Secure and trustworthy platform

What did we do?

We streamlined and digitized the registration process for BDO Remit — faster, simpler, and user-friendly.

How can we design a process that complies with legal requirements and protects user security?

  • Gathering BDO's required information through their official forms

  • Implementing identity verification using Veriff

  • Listing all necessary user information for account setup

  • Documenting competitor onboarding flows and user reviews

  • Designing an onboarding process based on the most efficient user journey

  • Driving product exposure and feedback through partner-aligned events.

Usability testing

Conducted usability tests post-launch to enhance UI and streamline user experience in preparation for the next release.

Conclusion

What happened?

  • Acquired 1,300 users in 3 months BayaniPay has been public, and 4,000+ users by April 2022. It increased to 18,000 users now!

  • $3.5M+ remittances processed by April 2022

In the next phase

  • Improving the design system: Improved and organized the existing Design System for BayaniPay to centralize designs and have better communication and handoff between Product, Design, and Tech

  • Interviews, Usability Testing, and Design Audits: Conducting usability tests and interviews to better understand how we can improve the process more. Worked closely with QA and Dev team during Design Audits to identify user problems before it reaches the user
